Stećci – medieval tombstones are decorated with rudimentary graphics. The most common motifs that appear on the tombstones are representations of people.

Stećci are a unique spiritual, artistic and cultural phenomenon characteristical for Bosnia and Herzegovina and its environment.

Scientific collection and processing of stećci began with the arrival of the Austro-Hungarian Empire on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the center of all activities was the National Museum in Sarajevo. In the courtyard of the museum there still are the most valuable artistic tombstones.
